Manufacturers include Mitsubishi Daikin Fujitsu Daikin and Panasonic
Hope you enjoy the read and we will publish soon about new gasses used in portable air conditioning systems also.

In 1999 the Kyoto Protocol on global warming listed HFC refrigerants that were contributing to the global warming. This, in turn, led to the introduction of F-Gas regulations in Europe and at the start of January 2015 the next stage of F-gas laws was introduced which detailed the phase down of HFC refrigerant.
It is important to note though that this is a phase down and NOT a phase out – with regulations now based on the tonnes of CO2 equivalent of all refrigerants sold or traded in Europe.
The air conditioning market moved over to R410a refrigerant in 2006 as it offered high efficiencies, achieved by operating at higher pressures and the introduction of inverter technology in DX split systems. It also replaced R22 refrigerant, along with R407c, which was banned because of it’s potential to damage the ozone layer.
All refrigerant has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) with carbon used as the base. Carbon has a GWP of 1. R410a has a GWP of 2,088 meaning that if one kilo is released into the atmosphere it would have 2,088 times the harmful effect of 1kg of carbon making it’s GWP a real issue, even though the ozone depleting potential (ODP) is 0.
Because of this and the European regulation CE 517/2014 making the replacement of fluorinated gases (F-gases) compulsory, in the past few years in our industry we have seen the cost of R410a refrigerant increase by up to 600%, whilst we go through a transition period between 2017 and 2030.
Now it’s time to look at the latest R32 refrigerant the market has to offer and the reasons why other refrigerants are being phased down.
As well as an ozone depletion potential of 0, R32 refrigerant has only approximately 1/3 of the GWP of R410a. Consequently, increasing investigations of this next generation refrigerant.
Until now, R32 refrigerant has been extremely difficult to handle and it’s use, therefore, was not practical. R410a is currently the most commonly used refrigerant in developed countries, however if all systems were converted to R32 the impact to global warming from HFCs in 2030 would be reduced by the CO2 equivalent of approximately 800 million tonnes (19%) compared to the continued use of R410a. It is these statistics that have swayed manufacturers decisions to transition to R32 refrigerant, as well as other factors including energy efficiency, safety and cost effectiveness.
All refrigerants have strong and weak points when it comes to assessing the 4 key criteria, which also varies depending on the type of product. Many major air conditioning manufacturers have determined that R32 is the optimum choice for the unit in their products because of the following benefits.
• R32 has a low GWP (675)
• It has a 0% o-zone impact (ODP)
• Higher in energy efficiency
• Longer pipe runs are available
• It is compliant with the F-gas phasedown
• R32 is affordable and readily available
• 75% less global warming impact
• 30% less refrigerant
Being a single component refrigerant, R32 is easier to re-use and recycle. It is also low-cost to produce and easier to handle because it doesn’t separate and utilises a similar technology, keeping costs round about the same. In addition, R32 is low-toxic, difficult to ignite and does not explode.
We will now start to see more air conditioning units introduced which use R32 as this will allow the industry to transition smoothly to a situation where we will still get the performance and efficiencies needed for our buildings, using refrigerants and equipment that delivers much lower GWP overall.
R32 is now available in the majority of single split systems with Daikin Air Conditioning, Fujitsu Air Conditioning & Panasonic Air Conditioning
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Many people think that air
conditioning is just for the summer months, but a number of systems feature a <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">reverse
cycle system, or heat pump. This
facility offers extra versatility as the system can be switched between cooling
and heating mode as required, keeping the workplace at a comfortable
temperature all year round. Maintaining

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">Reverse
cycle air conditioning works by warm air passing over a refrigerant to cool it
down and lower the temperature of a room during the warmer months of the year. For
winter heating, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the outside (even on cold
days) to warm up the air going into the room to raise the internal temperature.

these systems can also dehumidify the air and are an ideal way <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">to remove airborne fungus and

the chance of airborne illnesses passing from person to person.

conditioning uses a single outdoor unit to pump cool or warm air into
multiple rooms through hidden vents. As you can use the same ducts all year

saves space in your walls and on your roof compared to installing a separate
ducted gas heating system.

systems are cheaper to install, as they don't use ducts, and are connected
to outdoor units (or a single outdoor unit in a multi-head split system). Some systems can be set up to provide heating
and cooling in different zones at the same time.<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">[1]

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Here at London Cool we are finding micathermic space heaters are becoming increasingly popular with our customers. These heaters are unique in that they combine two methods of heating – convection and radiant heating - to provide fast, efficient and safe heating for the workplace.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">When a micathermic heater is switched on, an electrical resistor converts electricity into heat. As it’s generated, the heat is absorbed by a series of metal coils encased in a silicate mineral – mica - which can withstand very high temperatures. Mica has high thermal conductivity, ie it’s good at transferring heat, and a high watt density which means it emits energy from its surface when it’s heated up.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Once it is up to temperature, a micathermic space heater generates electromagnetic rays. The heat is not directly transferred to objects in the room, but transferred to objects via these rays, warming the ambient air as well, and heating up the entire room faster than most space heaters. This makes them energy efficient as they use less time and electricity in warming up and more time and electricity in warming the person and the room.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A micathermic heater provides approximately 80% convection heat and radiating 20% infrared heat waves as well, warming you and the room at the same time - fast. Once it’s switched on, a micathermic space heater can reach its maximum heat output in about one minute.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Other advantages of micathermic space heaters -
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">• Micathermic heaters are very portable as they have an insulated handle, enabling these lightweight units to be wheeled about which is ideal for zone heating
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">• Micathermic heaters have a protective grill covering the mica heating panels. As mica is an electric insulator, the panels keep the grill cool to the touch, preventing any burns or shocks, and enabling them to be moved even when just switched off.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">• The heater’s thermostat monitors temperature and is programmed to automatically cut power to the unit if it starts overheating, and a motion sensor will cut the power if it is knocked. They are particularly suitable for use in a children’s nursery, care home or hospital.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">• The mica panels are thin and lightweight, meaning that the micathermic heater can be mounted on the walls.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">• Micathermic heaters have the ability to heat up larger areas without the assistance of a blower, meaning they produce no sound when running. The air warmed by the micathermic heater pushes the cool air towards the heater itself which is how the cool air is warmed without the use of a fan.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">• An area warmed by a micathermic heater remains warm for a long time even after the heater is turned off.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">• While other types of heaters heat the ambient air, the air will become dry. Using micathermic heaters mean the air will retain moisture.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">• The element of the Micathermic heater is small and only used to heat the mica stone so the element consumes very little power.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The British heatwave
could well be over and we will see a return to ‘normal’ summer temperatures.<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">As the temperatures drop, it might be thought
that there is no longer a need for portable air conditioning, but on bright sunny
days the inside of buildings will still heat up due to solar heat gain, especially
in the city centres.<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Although the sunlight
may not be as strong, the lower angle of the sun means that it is shining into
buildings for longer periods during daylight hours.<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

buildings, such as London and Birmingham, are often 1–3°C warmer than rural locations. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">To
counter this effect, some buildings have solar control glass installed which
reflects heat and reduces glare from the sun’s rays. As well as being practical, it’s also a
requirement under Approved

summer period.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">When deciding whether to buy or hire a portable air
conditioning unit, you may come across the term ‘BTU’ or alternatively
Kilowatts. BTU stands for British Thermal Unit and in
the world of HVAC is the amount of heat
that an air conditioner can remove from a room.
If an air conditioner’s capacity is measure in Kilowatts then one
Kilowatt is equivalent to 3,412 BTUs.
For the science-minded among us, One BTU is the amount of energy needed
to raise 1 pound of water 1°F
at sea level.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Why are BTUs or Kilowatts important when choosing an air
conditioner? Having the correct number
of BTUs for the space you need to cool means that the room will be cooled
efficiently. It should also be borne in
mind that as the BTU rating increases so does the weight, size and cost of the
air conditioner.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Too high a BTU means that although the room will cool
quickly, the unit will cycle on and off once
the temperature is reached and to keep
it at that temperature, overworking the
compressor and shortening the life of the unit.
If the air conditioner is too small in BTU terms for the size of the
space to be cooled, then the desired temperature will not be reached, the unit
will continuously work too hard, possibly shortening its lifespan.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It may seem a daunting task to have to calculate the number
of BTUs needed, but London Cool’s website has an easy to use cooling
calculator. All you need to do is enter
the room sizes, or total area and London Cool will do the rest. The calculator will list the types of air
conditioning unit most suitable for the space, the number required and the
total cooling capacity in Kilowatts.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Our Sales Team are on hand to help and advise, especially as
there are other factors that may affect the number and choice of portable air
conditioners. It is important to know
whether there is an area to vent the warm air away, eg an opening window or a
ceiling void, what the room will be used
for (eg kitchens or server rooms/data centres will need more cooling), how many
people occupy the room and the level of activity, whether the room gets a lot
of direct sunlight and the outside
temperature.

What should I do?

As the outside temperatures rise and the sun is beating
through the windows, it is tempting to turn your portable air conditioning down
to as low as 16 degrees, thinking that the colder the air conditioner is set,
the faster it will cool the room.

In fact, this is not how the cooling units work.
Whatever the temperature is set at, an air conditioner will pump out the same
amount of cool air, and setting it at a lower temperature only tells it when to
stop pumping out the cool air, rather than speeding up the cooling effect.

The air conditioning units should ideally be set at around

provide a ‘reasonable’ working temperature which is covered by the Workplace(Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">Safe
working temperatures are important in any work environment.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Excess
heat can cause drowsiness which could lead to mistakes or unfinished work. High
temperatures can also cause heat stress and other health problems. <span style="color: #111111; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Heat stress
occurs when the body’s means of controlling its internal temperature starts to
fail. As well as air temperature, factors such as work rate, humidity and
clothing worn while working may lead to heat stress.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Maximum Temperatures

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Surprisingly
there is no legal maximum safe working temperature - the only requirement is
that workplace temperatures in buildings should be ‘reasonable’. (Workplace
Regulations 1992). <span style="color: #111111; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">A meaningful maximum figure cannot be given due to the high
temperatures found in, for example, bakeries, glass works or foundries. In such
environments it is still possible to work safely provided appropriate controls
are present. Factors other than air temperature, ie radiant temperature,
humidity and air velocity, become more significant and the interaction between
them become more complex with rising temperatures.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">According
to the TUC, during hot summers employees are more prone to trip or slip and
staff working with computers often suffer from stress, tension and tiredness. For manual workers, working in hot conditions
can cause fainting, dizziness and cramps and for some workers the heat can
affect lungs and hearts, eg cause asthma, throat infections or rhinitis.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">As
there is no legal ruling, the TUC recommends maximum safe working temperatures
of 27ºC for manual workers, and 30ºC for
sedentary workers.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Controlling High Temperatures

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">In
an office, employers may be able to keep the maximum temperature below 30ºC
with suitable ventilation and shades. Employers can also make staff more
comfortable by allowing a sensible dress code and by ensuring there are regular
breaks for cooling drinks.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Suitable
ventilation can take the form of air conditioning, open windows and fans which
can help to keep the air fresh. Stuffy air interferes with workers’
concentration, and can raise the temperature to uncomfortable levels.<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;"> If you have a cooling system orunit, then keep the windows closed so that the air conditioning units work
effectively.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">If
employers use air conditioning, they need to ensure it is regularly serviced and maintained by a qualified engineer.
Poor functioning air conditioning can actually increase the temperature
rather than lower it. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">London Cool recommends keeping your
air conditioning maintained throughout the winter to ensure it will work when
you really need it. In addition, keeping
to a planned maintenance schedule not only ensures your air conditioning is working
at optimum levels, it will comply with a manufacturer’s extended parts

appreciate the warmer weather, pollen-laden flowers, trees, grasses and weeds, can bring on the misery of hay fever for many people.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">Hay fever is an allergic reaction which many <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">people are susceptible to, particularly between 5am and 10am, when the pollen count is at its highest.
According to NHS Inform, on humid and windy days, pollen spreads easily while rainy days will help clear pollen from the air, causing pollen levels to fall. During their pollen season, plants release pollen early in the morning. As the day gets warmer and more flowers open, pollen levels rise. On sunny days, the pollen count is highest in the early evening.

carry out an on-site demonstration of some portable cooling equipment. The reason they needed some portable cooling is
that over the weekend of 7 and 8 April they were holding a beer festival – Cask 2018
– and were looking for an efficient way of keeping the cask-conditioned
beers cool so they could be enjoyed at their best. The kegs were to be stored in insulated
racks either 2m x 2m or 4m x 2m x 0.5m which would be kept cool with an air
supply at 8 degrees. London Cool delivered two Weltem spot coolers to the brewery to deliver cool air to
each rack.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Our new Trainee Business Developer, Ivo, has been telling us

at our head office in <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/VgkUDVVNT932" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Crawley, West

smells recently!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">Possibly
we should get out more, but it is true that air conditioning systems can give
off smells, evidenced by recent reports which have highlighted an increase in
the number of room air conditioning units giving out a bad smell.
Research has shown that one reason for the bad smells in installed air conditioner
systems is a rather disgusting one – dead skin!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">Scientists
have discovered that the stench from smelly air conditioner systems is caused
by dead skins cells that our bodies shed which are then trapped in room cooling
units, air conditioner filters and coils. Bacteria that live in air
conditioning units survive by eating dead skin cells. With each person
shedding approximately 8lbs of dead skin cells each year, these are rather well
fed bacteria.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">From
our offices we serve London and the South East.
We have looked at our air conditioning call outs, especially for
companies that have no air conditioning maintenance contracts or service
contract visits for installed air conditioning. A lot of the call outs
for breakdowns or air conditioner smells are due to poor maintenance or
understanding how room air conditioners work. Dead skin will get into air
conditioner systems and if this skin or hair also has perfume, aftershaves,
hair or skin conditioners then this will add to the amount caught in room air
conditioners’ filters and coils and increase the potential for installed air
conditioning systems to give off odours.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">Now
here comes the science bit . . . dead cells contain <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">keratin<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">, a structural protein which
makes up fingernails and hair in humans. In room air conditioning units,
the bacteria that live there contain chemicals called keratinases. When
the keratinase chemicals digest the skin cells, the keratin is broken down and
produces ammonium which is circulated by the air conditioning unit - spreading
the smell of urine.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">Proteins
make up a large portion of the human diet and are converted to ammonium after
they are broken down in the liver. As it passes through the liver,
ammonia is converted to ammonium and then to urea - the main ingredient in
urine – with its very distinctive smell.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "sans-serif";">You
don’t need to be a scientist to realise that any air conditioning units which
are home to the bacteria are likely to make your whole house, car or office
smell like urine. With a lot of air conditioner smell call-outs, people
will say their air conditioning smells of cat urine – which seems pretty unfair
to cats! Other chemicals found in human
skin cells - eg lipids and triglycerides - can create other revolting smells.
